Description
A comforting and savory stuffing made with cubed bread, sautéed onions, celery, and fresh herbs like sage, thyme, and rosemary. This classic recipe creates a deliciously moist stuffing with a crispy golden top, perfect for any holiday meal.
Ingredients
- 10 cups cubed bread (sourdough or French)
- 1 large onion, finely diced
- 2 cups celery, finely chopped (about 3–4 stalks)
- 2 tbsp fresh sage, finely chopped
- 2 tbsp fresh thyme, finely chopped
- 1 tbsp fresh rosemary, finely chopped
- 4 cups low-sodium broth (chicken or vegetable)
- ½ cup unsalted butter (1 stick), melted
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Cube the bread and allow it to dry overnight or toast it lightly to ensure it’s not too soft.
Finely chop the onion, celery, and fresh herbs (sage, thyme, and rosemary).
In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and celery and cook, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are tender, about 5-7 minutes. Season with salt and pepper as you go.
Place the bread cubes in a large mixing bowl. Pour the sautéed vegetable mixture over the bread cubes. Add the chopped herbs and season with additional salt and pepper to taste.
Gradually stir in the warm broth until the mixture is evenly moistened. Be careful not to add too much liquid at once.
Transfer the stuffing to a greased baking dish. Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes.
After 30 minutes, remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and crispy.
Let the stuffing cool slightly before serving.
Notes
- Gluten-Free Stuffing: Use gluten-free bread in place of sourdough or French bread for a gluten-free version.
- Vegan Stuffing: Swap the unsalted butter for plant-based butter and use vegetable broth instead of chicken broth.
- Add-ins: Feel free to add sautéed mushrooms, cranberries, or chopped nuts like pecans or walnuts for extra flavor and texture.
