Description

Cheddar Pretzel Hot Dogs combine soft, chewy pretzel dough wrapped around classic hot dogs, enhanced with sharp cheddar cheese for a savory, satisfying snack or meal. The pretzel dough is boiled briefly in a baking soda solution before baking to achieve the signature pretzel crust. Topped with melted butter and coarse salt, these hot dogs deliver a delicious blend of flavors and textures, perfect for game days, parties, or casual dinners.

Ingredients

Dough

  • 2½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ Tbsp brown sugar
  • 2¼ tsp active dry yeast
  • ¾ cup + 2 Tbsp warm water
  • ¾ cup shredded cheddar cheese

Soaker

  • 2 cups boiling water
  • ¼ cup baking soda

Hot Dogs and Toppings

  • 8 hotdogs
  • ½ cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 2 Tbsp butter (melted)
  • coarse salt, for sprinkling
  • mustard, for serving

Instructions

  1. Make the dough: Using a countertop mixer, combine flour, salt, brown sugar, yeast, warm water, and shredded cheddar cheese. Mix on medium speed for 6 minutes until a smooth dough forms.
  2. Let dough rise: Transfer dough to an oiled bowl, cover it, and place it in a warm location (like an oven with the light on) for 30 minutes to allow the dough to rise.
  3. Prepare baking soda soaker: Mix boiling water with baking soda until fully dissolved, then set aside to cool. This mixture will be used to dip the pretzel dogs to achieve their characteristic crust.
  4. Shape dough ropes: Divide the dough into eight equal pieces and roll each piece into a 20-22 inch long rope.
  5. Preheat oven: Set the oven to 450°F to prepare for baking the pretzel dogs.
  6. Wrap hot dogs: Starting with one end of each hot dog, wrap a dough rope around it securely.
  7. Boil pretzel dogs: Place the wrapped hot dogs in the cooled baking soda soaker for 2 minutes, making sure they are submerged. Spoon water over the top if needed.
  8. Rest pretzel dogs: Transfer the pretzel dogs onto a parchment-lined baking sheet (sprayed with non-stick spray), sprinkle with coarse salt, and let rest uncovered for 10 minutes.
  9. Add cheese topping: Sprinkle shredded sharp cheddar cheese on top of each pretzel dog before baking.
  10. Bake: Bake the pretzel dogs at 450°F for 10-12 minutes or until they turn golden brown.
  11. Finish with butter: Immediately after baking, brush the pretzel dogs with melted butter to add flavor and shine.
  12. Serve: Serve warm with mustard on the side.

Notes

  • Using warm water activates the yeast properly for a good rise.
  • Boiling the pretzel dogs in baking soda water is essential for developing the classic pretzel crust and flavor.
  • Spraying the parchment paper helps prevent sticking and makes cleanup easier.
  • Resting the pretzel dogs before baking allows the dough to relax, which helps achieve better texture.
  • Melted butter brushed on the hot pretzels adds richness and helps the salt adhere better.
  • For an extra cheesy flavor, use sharp cheddar both inside the dough and as a topping.
  • Serve immediately for best texture and flavor; the pretzel crust softens if left out too long.
