Description

These Baked Maple Glazed Donuts are a delightful and healthier alternative to traditional fried donuts. Soft, moist, and packed with rich maple flavor, they are topped with a luscious maple glaze that perfectly complements the fluffy donut base. Ideal for breakfast or an indulgent snack, these baked donuts are quick to prepare and easy to customize.

Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

Wet Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 2 tablespoons pure maple syrup
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Glaze Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/4 cup pure maple syrup
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon maple extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat and prepare pan: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly spray your donut pan with non-stick cooking spray to prevent sticking and set it aside.
  2. Mix dry ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, brown sugar, salt, and baking powder ensuring they are well combined. Set this dry mixture aside.
  3. Combine wet ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the melted unsalted butter, egg, sour cream, pure maple syrup, and vanilla extract until the mixture is smooth and homogeneous.
  4. Incorporate wet into dry: Gently fold the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, mixing just until combined. The batter will be thick; avoid overmixing to keep the donuts tender and fluffy.
  5. Fill donut pan: Transfer the batter into a piping bag or a large gallon-sized ziplock bag with a corner snipped off. Pipe the batter evenly into the prepared donut pan cavities. If desired, gently smooth the tops of the donuts with a spatula for an even surface.
  6. Bake: Bake the donuts in the preheated oven for 12 to 15 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the donuts comes out clean, indicating they are fully cooked.
  7. Cool donuts: Allow the donuts to cool in the pan for a few minutes. Then, carefully remove them from the pan and transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before glazing.
  8. Prepare maple glaze: While the donuts cool, combine the melted butter, pure maple syrup, powdered sugar, and maple extract in a small bowl. Whisk until the glaze is smooth and free of lumps.
  9. Glaze donuts: Dip the top half of each cooled donut into the maple glaze, allowing excess glaze to drip off. Place the glazed donuts upright on the cooling rack so the glaze can set properly.
  10. Store and serve: These baked maple glazed donuts are best enjoyed the day they are made. If you have leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two days to maintain freshness.

Notes

  • Use a piping bag or ziplock bag for easier and cleaner filling of the donut pan.
  • Make sure the donuts are fully cooled to prevent the glaze from melting and sliding off.
  • Donuts are best enjoyed fresh but can be refrigerated for a couple of days in an airtight container.
  • For a dairy-free version, substitute butter and sour cream with plant-based alternatives.
  • If you prefer a stronger maple flavor, increase the maple syrup in the glaze by a tablespoon.
